2024 Litters

A successful, sustainable, breeding program achieves two equally important objectives – it incrementally improves the overall phenotype, and simultaneously reduces variability, in each successive generation. It is such continuous improvement and overall consistency in soundness, conformation, temperament, and performance attributes that characterize the Superior Pointers companion gun dog breeding program. As accomplished as were the Elhew pointers we produced two decades ago, successive generations have clearly been – on average – even more capable. As Bob Wehle often observed, “If they are not, you’re doing something wrong”.

Continuous improvement and reduced variability of the phenotype is accelerated when breeding only superior, complimentary individuals within a homogeneous gene pool, or "family". Random, indiscriminate breeding within a restricted gene pool, conversely, results in the inevitable decline of the phenotype. It is, therefore, imperative that practitioners of line breeding possess comprehensive knowledge of individual and family characteristics, critically evaluate breeding stock, and "know what good looks like". The Superior Pointers breeding program reflects more than sixty years of experience with pointing dogs, including decades spent observing multiple Bird Dog Hall of Fame enshrined canine performers in major circuit FDSB/AFTCA recognized field trial competition.

Our thoughtfully crafted breedings are informed by experience, and guided by exacting standards. The dogs that we use are all exceptional representatives of their breed and bloodline, and exhibit the very best pure Elhew companion gun dog genetics. While such genetics are a generally reliable indicator of anticipated soundness, conformation, temperament, and performance characteristics, they are not an absolute, infallible predictor. Every dog used in the Superior Pointers breeding program is, therefore, critically evaluated to confirm that they are physically and temperamentally sound, and accomplished on wild birds. It is these exemplary wild bird handling credentials which, we believe, differentiates the Superior Pointers breeding program from many others. The twelve equally promising spring 2024 breedings detailed below represent a continued refinement of our proven breeding strategy, and will yield the overall best Elhew companion gun dogs that we have ever produced. He is the product of a frozen semen breeding of Striking Elhew Mack to an outstanding Rex daughter, and Mack granddaughter. Frank is proving, like his illustrious sire, to be an unusually prepotent stud dog.

Lu is a quick, athletic, hard running 46-pound female, and an especially proficient bird finder. She is as attractive on the ground, as she is on point. Lu is a litter sister to Striking Elhew Thor.

This breeding concentrates the genetics of Superior Pointers’ foundation sire, Striking Elhew Mack, coveted by so many knowledgeable students of the Elhew bloodline. This is a repeat of 2022 and 2023 breedings that produced exceptionally uniform litters of outstanding pups. This promising litter will be whelped and raised in McRae, Arkansas by Lu’s devoted owner, Josh Atkins. Thor x Jo

Thor is a powerful, athletic, 56 pound male with a smooth, fluid stride, who is well proven on seven different species of upland birds. He has also proven to be an unusually prepotent companion gun dog sire. Thor is a littermate to the equally impressive Hot Elhew Cholula (Lu).

Jo is a fast, agile powerful, tenacious, solidly built 48 pound female with an attractive gait, who is as captivating on the ground, as on point. She travels with a high head and cracking tail, and hunts ambitiously while handling kindly. This “double Mack” granddaughter is equally proficient on forest and prairie grouse. Jo is a littermate to Striking Elhew Lincoln.

This double cross to prepotent sire, Striking Elhew Redemption, is rich in the Elhew Strike x Elhew Kiwi genetics which Bob Wehle often observed produced his best companion gun dogs – and. Particularly, his best ruffed grouse dogs. This promising litter will be whelped, and raised, in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Thor x Val

Thor is a powerful, athletic, 56 pound male with a smooth, fluid, stride who is well proven on seven species of wild birds. He is, also, a proven sire of class companion gun dogs. Thor is a littermate to Hot Elhew Cholula (Lu).

Val is a quick, nice moving 42 pound frozen semen daughter of Superior Pointers’ foundation sire, Striking Elhew Mack. .She has been extensively hunted in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, and is well proven on multiple species of wild birds. Val is a litter sister to Hot Elhew Frank’s Sauce (Frank).

The 2023 breeding of Thor to Val produced exceptional companion gun dogs, as did the "mirror image" breedings in 2022 and 2023 of Thor's sister Lu, to Val's brother Frank. These equally outstanding prospects will exceed the expectations of the most discriminating Elhew enthusiast. Val’s anticipated litter will be whelped and raised in McRae, Arkansas by Josh Atkins and his family. All four colors are anticipated.

Lincoln x Lola

Lincoln is a powerful 59-pound double Mack grandson with a smooth, fluid stride and exemplary character on game. He exhibits a confident, compliant temperament, and is well proven on multiple species of wild birds.

Lola is a classy, fast, athletic, exciting, young 48-pound female who exhibits exceptional style on the ground, and on game. She is accomplished on both prairie grouse and pheasants. She has previously produced outstanding companion gun dogs by two different double Mack grandsons, as will this breeding to Lincoln.

Jack x June

Jack is a well made 54 pound male with a great temperament and impeccable Elhew genetics whom is certain to have, as a sire, a consequential positive impact on the bloodline. He is very fast, beautifully gaited, travels “high on both ends”, and exhibits exemplary character on game. Jack hunts ambitiously, but adjusts his range to the terrain and handles effortlessly.

June is an attractive young 44 pound daughter of Striking Elhew Bossman – one of the very best Elhew males of his generation. While accomplished on multiple species of wild birds, she is particularly proficient on ruffed grouse. June is well made, attractively gaited, and exhibits admiral style and intensity on game.

The pure Elhew genetics of this highly anticipated litter are derived primarily from Bob Wehle’s incomparable Elhew Strike x Elhew Kiwi “nick”, with a secondary influence of National Champion Elhew Snakefoot “blood” through his well known son, Elhew Distinction – Mr. Wehle’s 1996 “brag dog”. Jack is a hard driving, powerful, tenacious, attractively gaited, 54 pound young male well proven on five species of upland birds. He is a proficient bird finder, and a strong, natural retriever. Jack exemplifies the “class” companion gun dog.

Ruby is a beautiful, 42 pound, young female, with an exceptional temperament who handles multiple species of upland birds with equal proficiency. She is quick, agile, and hunts diligently at an appropriate range for the terrain. Ruby is equally attractive on the ground, and on point.
